Family Photography in Grand Rapids, Michigan (Melissa + Gabe Doran)

This family photography session turned out to be tons of fun, because when you’ve got an active two-year-old and two golden retrievers (one a puppy!), how could it be anything other than high-energy and high fun?

Melissa and Gabe graciously agreed to let me photograph their family for my Hundred Person Project, and I set myself a bit of a challenge. Could I make the loading dock behind Michael’s a beautiful setting for photos?

First we used the stairs by the dock for a few photos, then we moved over to a small stretch of grass between Michael’s and the adjoining parking lot. This is where I really wanted to frame up the photos to look like we were in a field in the country (it helped that the lawn guys haven’t mowed it in a while!).

Overall I think I accomplished my goal to turn a drab space into a fun place for family photography, and we had a lot of fun getting the dogs and the two-year-old to sit and stay. Who knew that kids were so much like pets?
